Rocking SXSW with Do512
From the massive influx of boot-cladded out-of-towners, to even more terrifying traffic than normal, to badge holders and non-badge holders alike clamoring for entry to events, South By Southwest took over Austin this March with its characteristic chaos. And, as always, the logistical challenges surpassed SXSW of years past (ahem, 24/7 Uber surcharges and $50 downtown parking).
Faced with their own unique logistical hurdles, our friends at Do512 approached us for help: how could they continuously stream their rotating lineup of bands to the largest possible audience – when they only had a small venue? How could they meet the demand for immediate quality content? And how could they do it with a non-corporate-company budget?
To help Do512 maximize the investment in their SXSW Do512 Lounge Sessions (and help them further digital accessibility to an increasingly exclusive SXSW), we created custom solutions in the form of physical (i.e. gear) and organizational systems.
The first challenge was to ensure that footage captured by Do512 could be reliably streamed to their social channels, despite their network being slowed down by concert-goers uploading their own content. To remedy this, we custom engineered a network backbone from which to broadcast two existing high-definition cameras and ingest the audio.
With this reliable connection established, our team then helped Do512 create engaging live stream content with engaging sound. Through capturing content from concert-goers, adding it to a live cut, we created and streamed a video mix, without breaks, to Austinites stuck at their desks.
The result? An immersive live streaming experience with great sound and great engagement (think over 1.3k viewers).
